Sewer Line Repair

Waste coming up in a tub, several drains backing up at once or a smell in the yard. Stop running water in the house and call San Antonio 24 Hour Plumber — the line is camera inspected before anyone quotes a repair.

Signs That Need Attention

  • Sewage rising in the lowest shower, tub or floor drain
  • Toilets bubbling when the washing machine empties
  • Every drain in the house slowing down at the same time
  • A soggy strip of lawn or a smell along the line to the street
  • Repeat blockages that come back within weeks of clearing

Sewage backing up inside the house is a health issue as well as a plumbing one. Keep people and pets away from it, stop flushing and stop using the washing machine and dishwasher, because everything you send down has to come back out at the lowest opening. Do not try to clear a main line with chemical cleaner.

What the Service Includes

Sewer work is worth doing on evidence rather than assumption, because the repairs are not small. San Antonio 24 Hour Plumber inspects first and quotes from what the camera shows.

Camera inspection of the line

A camera run through the cleanout shows the condition of the pipe end to end — roots at a joint, a section that has dropped, a crack, or simply a blockage. You should be shown what it found, not just told.

Clearing roots and blockages

Cutting heads and hydro jetting remove roots and buildup and restore the pipe's full diameter. On an old line this buys time and tells you how sound the pipe underneath actually is.

Spot repair or replacement

A single broken section can often be dug and replaced on its own. A line that has failed in several places, or cast iron that has corroded through along its length, needs a longer answer — including trenchless options where the ground and the layout allow.

Your Repair Options

Two San Antonio patterns account for most sewer calls. The first is age: houses inside Loop 410 from the 1920s through the 1950s were plumbed with cast iron and, in some cases, clay tile out to the street. Both corrode or crack at the joints eventually, and both are now decades past the point where that is surprising. The second is trees. Mature live oaks and pecans, the kind that make older streets like those around Alamo Heights and Leon Valley pleasant to walk down, send roots straight to the moisture at a leaking sewer joint.

Soil movement adds to it. Expansive clay across much of the area lifts and drops through wet and dry seasons, which is enough over decades to pull a joint apart or leave a belly in the run where waste sits instead of flowing.

If only one fixture is affected, this is probably drain cleaning rather than a sewer repair — our guide on telling a clogged drain from a sewer line problem explains how to work out which you have. Where damp is showing up inside the house instead, leak detection is the place to start.

Sewer Line Questions

What affects the cost of a sewer line repair?

How long the failed section is, how deep the line sits and what is on top of it — lawn, a driveway or a slab all change the work. A spot repair at one joint is a different job from replacing a run to the street. San Antonio 24 Hour Plumber quotes from the camera inspection so the scope is based on what is actually down there.

Can a sewer backup be fixed the same day?

The backup itself usually can — clearing the blockage gets the house usable again, and that is the first priority on an emergency call. If the camera then shows a broken or collapsed section, that repair is scheduled separately once you have seen the footage and approved the quote.

Is sewage in the tub dangerous?

Treat it as a health hazard. Keep children and pets out of the room, do not run any more water, and avoid contact with the waste or anything it has touched. Ventilate the room if you can do it without walking through the water. San Antonio 24 Hour Plumber takes backups as urgent calls for exactly this reason.

Do tree roots always mean replacing the pipe?

No. Roots get in through a joint or crack that already exists, so the question is how sound the rest of the pipe is. Cutting the roots out clears the line; the camera then shows whether that joint needs a spot repair or whether the whole run is failing. Removing the tree is rarely the answer on its own.
