Thermostats, heating elements, gas control valves, thermocouples, igniters and dip tubes all fail in ways that look identical from the shower. Each is testable, and most are replaceable without touching the tank.

Hard water is the single biggest factor here. Edwards Aquifer water carries a lot of dissolved mineral, and every time a tank heats it, some of that mineral drops out and settles on the bottom. The sediment layer insulates the burner from the water above it, so the unit works harder, takes longer and makes that rumbling noise. In a tankless unit the same mineral coats the heat exchanger and the flow sensors instead.
What the Service Includes
A heater that has stopped working is not automatically a heater that needs replacing. Ask an independent plumber to test before recommending, and to separate the repair from any replacement discussion in the quote.
Flushing and descaling
A tank full of sediment is drained and flushed; a tankless unit is descaled through its service valves. On hard water this is maintenance, not a repair, and skipping it is what shortens the life of the unit.
Checking the safety fittings
The temperature and pressure relief valve, the drain pan, the expansion tank and the gas or electrical connection are all inspected. A dripping relief valve is a warning about pressure or temperature, not a part to simply swap out.
Your Repair Options
Where the water is coming from decides most of this. A leak at a fitting, a valve or the relief line is a repair. Water coming through the bottom of the tank itself is the tank shell failing, and no repair puts that right - the unit is replaced. That distinction should be the first thing checked.
Age matters too, and so does what a repair buys you. Spending on a control valve in a unit that is already well past its expected life and scaled solid is often money that would have gone further towards the replacement. What affects the cost of a water heater repair?
Which part failed, whether it is a gas or electric unit, and whether the tank itself is sound. Replacing a thermostat or element is a small job; a gas control valve is a bigger one. Ask the independent plumber to test first and quote the specific repair, along with what a replacement would involve if that is the better call.
How long does a tank water heater last with San Antonio water?
Less than the brochure suggests, unless it has been flushed. Hard water leaves sediment that shortens element and burner life and eats into the anode rod that protects the tank. Units that get flushed regularly and have the anode checked last considerably longer than units that are ignored until they stop.
Is it safe to relight the pilot myself?
If you can smell gas, do not touch it - leave the building and call the gas utility from outside. Otherwise, follow only the instructions printed on the heater's own label, and stop if it does not light on the second try. Never work on a gas heater standing in water, and leave the gas control valve, the burner assembly and the flue to an independent plumber.
Should I get a tankless unit instead?
It depends on the house. Tankless units suit homes with long hot water runs and high demand, but they need adequate gas supply or electrical capacity, proper venting and yearly descaling on water this hard. Ask an independent plumber what your property would need rather than assuming the newer option is automatically right.
